How Did Novi Pulse come about?
It all started early 2005 when I bought a high definition camera from Best Buy. I wanted to capture my children growing up--just like my parents. I took the camera out of the box and took one look at the 100+ page manual and thought to myself "Ok why did I get a HD camera?" There was a lot to learn.
Fortunately, I had talked to Melissa Cohn--Public Relations Director for SWOCC--at various events in
Novi
who told me about classes I could take at SWOCC to learn how to produce television programs for public access cable. I started classes at SWOCC in the Fall 2005 and took classes from camera operation to the sound board to production. What began with the intention of capturing moments with my kids, family and friends on tape and editing the footage to DVD turned into more of a hobby through my experience with SWOCC. I found the people and the classes at SWOCC really great and sparked a interest in production I have yet to exhaust.
In March 2006, I approached Shana Thompson--Production Technician at SWOCC--with an idea for a show on public access. The idea was simple: I wanted to talk to leaders in
Novi
and learn more about their businesses, private lives, and things of most importance to them. I think the original name I came up with was "Novi Chat"-- not too cool--but the genesis for a terrific show concept and format was there. The following week, I came up with the current name of "Novi Pulse." (Pretty catchy, I think.)
Shana introduced me to Nathan Hartwick--Novi Production Specialist--who thought the idea would work great for government access and told me Sheryl Walsh--City of
Novi Relations Manager
--was looking for just such a production. "Novi Pulse" fit the bill. Like many great opportunities, it was a case of being in the right place at the right time. Sheryl was supportive of the show and with the creative leadership of Nathan; "Novi Pulse" came together in a few months.
On a personal note, I have to say there is a learning curve to interviewing someone on camera. I do not have a background in media but I am a quick study. I am looking to improve with each program! With the support and talent of people at SWOCC and the support of The City of Novi, I look forward to talking with the great leaders in
Novi
and sharing their stories with you, the viewer.
Please feel free to send me your suggestions or comments!
